Green bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and bitter melon (Momordica charantia) contain the active compounds beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol, which act in a way similar to insulin: they help stabilise blood sugar and protect the beta cells of the pancreas.

  1. Increases glucose uptake into muscle. More sugar is absorbed from the blood and used as energy.
  2. Increases liver glycogen stores. Excess glucose is stored instead of circulating in the blood (extra-pancreatic action).
